Professor Calestous Juma, you were born on June 9, 1953 at Port Victoria, Kenya. You attended Egoli Teacher’s College and obtained Teacher’s Certificate in 1974. In 1983, you obtained Master of Science Degree at the University of Sussex. You pursued Doctor of Philosophy in Science and Technology Policy Studies in the same University and completed in 1987.
Professor Calestous Juma, your career as an academic has been outstanding. You started as a Science Teacher at Mombasa, Kenya from 1974 – 1978. Between 1979 – 1982, you were an Editor and Researcher, Environment Liaison Centre, Nairobi. You were a Visiting Lecturer, Swiss Federal Technical Institute, Zurich (1984). You were a Research Associate and Project Leader, Public Law Institute, Nairobi (1984 – 1986). You have held so many prestigious positions both locally and internationally between 1986 – 2000 and currently you are the Professor of the Practice of International Development,. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. At the same University, you are the Director of Science, Technology and Globalization Project, as well as Faculty Chair for Science, Technology and Innovation Policy .
Professor Calestous Juma, you have several international and local awards and honours to your credit including Pew Scholars Award in Conservation and the Environment (1991), the United National Nations Global 500 Award (1993), Henry Shaw Medal, Missouri Botanical Garden (2001), Order of the Elder of the Burning Spear, President of the Republic of Kenya (2006), Doctor of Science (Honorary), University of Sussex, UK (2006).
As a result of your hard work you have been elected to several academies including the Royal Society of London, US National Academy of Science, Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS), World Academy of Art and Science, USA, New York Academy of Sciences and Kenya National Academy of Sciences.
Prof. Calestous Juma, you have authored several books and contributed to chapters in books. You have over twenty-three (23) publications, twenty-eight (28) chapters in books, thirty-six (36) articles, forty-seven (47) conference papers, thirty (30) monographs and forty-seven (47) consultancy reports to your credit. Indeed, you have written over 300 articles on Environment, Science and Technology in newspapers and magazines in Africa, Asia, Latin America and Europe.
